The 1971 Immigration Act (c 77) is the Parliament of the United Kingdom's Law on immigration. The law, as with the Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1962, and 1968, restricted immigration, primarily immigration to Britain. It introduces the concept of patriality or residence rights. It is also partially authorized to clarify legally the rights of Commonwealth citizens in the UK in preparation for future membership of the European Community to which it became a member country on 1 January 1973 which grants new automatic rights to EC citizens. This is connected in relation to deportation notices, in sections 11 and 23 of the 2000 Terrorism Act.

Callum Williams argues that foreign policy pressure led to the Conservative government of Edward Heath to adopt a discriminatory Commonwealth discriminatory policy, which broke from the previously non-discriminatory immigration policy that had preceded it. The government sees the need to placate Canada, New Zealand and Australia for future negative impacts on them when Britain will join the European Economic Community which will be the most difficult for people who immigrate from Britain in the hope of continuing close relationships.

Summary
One result of the Act is to stop permanent migration of workers from the Commonwealth. Further described the definition of "patrial" migrants, first introduced in the Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1968, as people born in England and those who have lived there for five years or longer.
