The University of Southern California Gould School of Law , located in Los Angeles, California, is a law school within the University of Southern California. The oldest law school in the Southwest United States, USC Law had its beginnings in 1896, and was officially established as a university school in 1900.

Histori

USC Law School had its beginnings in 1896 when Judge David C. Morrison opened his courtroom for 36 lawyers, among them in the future California Supreme Court Justice Frederick W. Houser and his wife, Sara Isabella Wilde; the couple will soon form the Los Angeles Law Student Association to discuss the concept of a formal law school.

Their efforts resulted in the incorporation of the Los Angeles Law School in 1898. The first legal title was granted in 1901 to Gavin W. Craig. 2002 saw the start of the USC Law Degree and International Program. This is a law school approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) since 1924. It joined the American School of Law Association (AALS) in 1907.

Academics

USC Gould rewards J.D., LL.M., and M.C.L. degree of law. There are currently about 600 J.D. students (200 per year) and a graduate program of approximately 200 LL.M. and M.C.L. students. It offers three certificate programs: business law, entertainment law and alternative dispute resolution.

Ratings

USC Gould has been consistently rated between 15 and 18 by US. News & amp; World Report list of "America's Best Postgraduate Schools" since this magazine published its annual version of ranking, ranked 18th in 2011. "The Law School 100", a ranking scheme that uses qualitative rather than quantitative criteria, 14 law school grades overall. It was registered with "A-" at "Diversity Honor Roll" in March 2011 by The National Jurist: The Magazine for Law Students.

USC Gould ranked 12th in the 2011 National Law Journal job placement study, with more than 32% of its graduation classes hired by the largest NLJ 250 law firm in the United States.

Academic journals and honors programs

USC Gould hosted three academic journals and offered an additional honors program: South California Legal Review , Overview of Southern California Law and Justice (formerly Review Legal Review and Women's Studies ), Interdisciplinary Journal , and Hale Moot Court Honors Program . S

The school has a chapter of the Order of the Coif, an honorary school of national law school.

Clinical program

USC Gould maintains six client clinics to provide students with experience with lawyers' skills.

  • International Human Rights Clinic - research and drafting in cases that attempt war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and terrorism; representing survivors of trafficking and domestic violence
  • Immigration Clinic - pro bono representative for clients in immigration cases from over 25 different countries
  • Wealth and Intellectual Technology Clinic - helping artists, entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, and policy makers with intellectual property issues
  • Mediation Clinic - mediation for petty claims and civil abuse cases for Los Angeles County Superior Court
  • The Post-Conviction Justice Project - representing clients in civil matters related to detention, trial of parole, and constitutional rights
  • Small Business Clinic - corporate legal aid for entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, and small businesses

Study abroad program

USC Gould offers international overseas courses, granting credit to J.D. students Students may spend a semester abroad at the Faculty of Law of the University of Hong Kong, University of Bocconi, Jean Moulin University Lyon 3, University of Bond and FundaÃÆ'§ç o GetÃÆ'ºlio Vargas. Previously, students could pursue a J.D./LL.M degree with the London School of Economics.

Dual Degree Program

USC Gould maintains a dual degree program with Marshall School of Business, Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, School of Price Public Policy, School of Social Work, Davis Gerontology School, and Annenberg Communication School. Double accelerated degree programs. If a non-law masters degree normally requires one year of study, a student in a double degree program earns a degree in just three years. If a master's degree normally takes two years, a total of four years is required.

USC Gould also maintains two other dual degree programs. The program with the California Institute of Technology allows students to receive a J.D. from USC and Ph.D. in the social sciences of Caltech. The dual degree program with USC School of Pharmacy allows students who are eligible to earn a J.D. and Pharm.D. degree..
