Focus
In the United States, many departments of university journalism - particularly in Western, South and Western universities - evolve into mass communication schools or colleges or "journalism and mass communication". In addition to learning the practical skills of journalism, public relations or advertising, students can also take the majors of "mass communication" or "mass communication research". The latter is often a degree awarded for doctorates from these schools, whether the focus of student research is the practice of journalism, the media economy, history, law or media influence.
The departmental structure in such a college can separate research and instruction in the professional or technical aspects of publishing newspapers and magazines, radio, television, and movies. Mass communication research topics include media institutions and processes, such as information dissemination, and media effects, such as persuasion or the manipulation of public opinion. Beyond the history of media and communications law, research methods in the field of mass communication have been leaning towards empirical research, experimental studies and quantitative methods, such as public opinion polls and content analysis from news media. However, qualitative research, including ethnographic case studies, interviews, and focus groups, received increased support in several specializations. Cultural-critical theory is less popular than other "communication studies" programs.
These programs are accredited by the ACEJMC Accreditation Board on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
The International Communication Association (ICA) and the National Communications Association (formerly the Speech Communication Association) include overlapping divisions and publications with AEJMC, but AEJMC historically has stronger links with the mass communication profession in the United States.
