The company was founded in 1885 as "Graves & O'Melveny" by Henry O'Melveny and Jackson Graves. The company gained traction through its work on land litigation around Spanish haciendas ownership in California and its handling of the legality of hydroelectric power, which helped transform the Los Angeles dry hollow into a car-centered metropolis. The company became "O'Melveny & Myers" when California Justice Chief Louis Wescott Myers joined the company after retiring from the California Supreme Court.

O'Melveny & amp; Myers Partner Walter E. Dellinger III defends the constitutionality of Washington, DC before the Supreme Court in the District of Columbia v. Heller . In March 2008, Dellinger argued that the city's ban on gun ownership and key terms of the trigger was not involved by the Second Amendment.
