Martin Hayter Short (born March 26, 1950) is a Canadian-American comedian, actor, singer and writer. He is known for his work on SCTV television programs and Saturday Night Live. He has starred in comedy movies, such as Three Amigos (1986), Innerspace (1987), Three Fugitives (1989), Bride (1991), Pure Luck (1991), Captain Ron (1992), Father of the Bride Part II ( 1995), Mars Attack! (1996), and Jungle 2 Jungle (1997), and created the characters, Jiminy Glick and Ed Grimley. In 1999, she won the Tony Award for her main appearance in Broadway revival Little Me.

Short attended Westdale High School and graduated from McMaster University with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work in 1971.

Careers
Initial career
When Short graduated from McMaster University, he intends to pursue a career in social work; However, he became interested in acting once he was cast in the production of Toronto Godspell in the same year. He came to public notice when the group produced an event for television, Second City of Television or SCTV , which lasts for several years in Canada, then the United States. Shortly appeared in SCTV in 1982-83. At SCTV, Short developed some characters before moving to Saturday Night Live for the 1984-85 season:

Saturday Night Live
Short joined Saturday Night Live for the 1984-85 season. She helped revive the show with much of her character for season ten (the last one produced by Dick Ebersol). "Short appearances on SNL help to revive the event fanbase, which has been marked after Eddie Murphy's departure, and in turn, will launch a successful career in film and television." In addition to his work on SCTV and SNL, Short has starred in several television specials and his own series. In 1985, Short starred in a special Showtime hour, Martin Short: Concert for the North Americas. This is Short's first live concert, interspersed with studio sketches and covers featuring Jackie Rogers Jr. Co-produced by CBC, it was aired as The Martin Short Comedy Special in Canada in March 1986. In 1989, another one-hour comedy short headline, this time for HBO, I, Martin Short, Goes Hollywood , classic Short shipping of all things in Hollywood. It featured many characters including Ed Grimley and Jackie Rogers Jr.
Short has had three television shows called The Martin Short Show, including the sitcom, The Martin Short Show, 1994; a comedy sketch show, The Show Formerly Known as the Martin Short Show , 1995; and the Martin Short Show syndicated talk show, which runs from 1999 to 2000.
Short starring as Jiminy Glick at Comedy Central PrimeTime Glick (2001-03). He interviewed players and celebrities as Jiminy Glick's character. The New York Times in 2002 called the character "the most unexpected and cute comic creations with no obstacles to hit TV since Bart Simpson was in the diapers."

Personal life
Family
Short met Canadian comic actress Nancy Dolman in 1972 during running Godspell . The couple married in 1980. Dolman retired from show business in 1985 to become a home-stay mother and raise his family. Short and Dolman adopted three children: Katherine (born 1983), Oliver (b 1986), and Henry (born 1989). Dolman died on August 21, 2010, due to ovarian cancer.
Brief and his family made their home in Pacific Palisades, California. He also owns a house on Lake Rosseau in Ontario. He is a naturalized US citizen.
Short has two stars on Canada's Walk of Fame. His brother, Michael is a comedy writer and two-time Emmy Award winner for comedy sketch writing.

Dolman's older brother, screenwriter/director Bob Dolman, (who was part of the Emmy SCTV winning team team with Short), married his close friend and colleague Andrea Martin, also in 1980. Dolman and Short are aunt and uncle of this couple. son, Jack and Joe. Bob Dolman and Martin have since divorced. Short is Clare Short's cousin, a former member of the British Parliament and a former UK cabinet minister.
Philanthropy
Short appeared in an episode of 2001 at Celebrity Who Own to Be a Millionaire hosted by Regis Philbin, winning $ 32,000 for charity, Loyola High School.
Short has been actively campaigning for the Women's Cancer Research Fund, and he received a "Courage Award" on behalf of his late wife in gala 2011 by the group.
