Plot

Rudy Baylor is a graduate of the Law Faculty of the University of Memphis. Unlike most of his graduates, he has no high-paying job and is forced to apply for a part-time position while serving drinks at the Memphis bar.

Desperate for a job, he was introduced to J. Lyman "Bruiser" Stone, a successful but cruel ambulance chaser lawyer who made him a partner. To get the cost, Rudy was asked to find a potential client at a local hospital. He meets Deck Shifflet, a former unethical-altered-paralegal insurance student who has failed the six-time exam. However, Deck is very good at collecting information and experts in insurance lawsuits.

Rudy has a bad faith insurance case that could be worth several million dollars in damages. When Stone is invaded by the FBI, Rudy and Deck prepare for their own practice. They filed suit on behalf of the middle-aged couple, Dot and Buddy Black, whose 22-year-old son Donny Ray, dying of leukemia, but could be rescued with a bone marrow transplant, were rejected by their insurance carriers. Benefits.

Rudy passed the Tennessee exam test but never denied a case before a judge and a jury. Now he finds himself against a group of experienced lawyers from a large corporation, led by Leo F. Drummond, a lawyer who uses unscrupulous tactics to win his case.

The original judge, Harvey Hale, will be dismissed because he sees it as a so-called "lottery" that slows down the judicial process. But a more sympathetic judge, Tyrone Kipler, took over when Hale suffered a fatal heart attack. Kipler, a former civil rights lawyer, immediately denied the insurance company's petition for dismissal.

While looking for a new client, Rudy meets Kelly Riker, a beaten wife whose beating husband Cliff has placed him in the hospital. Rudy persuades Kelly to file for divorce, which leads to a confrontation with Cliff that results in a rough husband's death. To keep Rudy from getting involved, Kelly tells the police that she killed her husband in self-defense. District attorneys refuse to prosecute.

Donny Ray died, but not before giving a video deposition at his home. The case was brought to trial, where Drummond received vital testimony of Rudy's key witness, Jackie Lemanczyk, who was struck from the record. However, thanks to Rudy's determination and skilled cross-examination of Great Benefit president Wilfred Keeley, the jury found out for the plaintiff.

This was a big win for Rudy and Deck, until the insurance company declared bankruptcy, allowing it to avoid paying compensation. There is no payment for grieving parents and no fees for Rudy.

Deciding that this success will create unrealistic expectations for future clients, Rudy decides to abandon his new practice and teach the law. He and Kelly leave town together.

box office

On the opening weekend, the film was ranked third behind Anastasia and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, earning $ 10,626,507. The film grossed $ 45,916,769 at the domestic box office, exceeding an estimated $ 40 million production budget, but is still regarded as a disappointment for the adaptation film of Grisham's novel, in particular compared to The Firm , made for guess - thinks the same amount but scoops up more than six times its budget.

Critical reception

The film generally received positive reviews from critics, with the film getting an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 46 reviews, with an average rating of 6.9 out of 10. The important consensus of the website states: "Enriched by talented players and Francis Ford Direction Coppola's strong, The Rainmaker is a satisfactory legal drama - and arguably the best of many John Grisham Hollywood adaptations. "At Metacritic, the film has 72 out of 100 ratings based on 19 critics, showing" general reviews positive".

Roger Ebert gave The Rainmaker three stars out of four, commenting: "I have enjoyed several films based on Grisham's novel... but I usually see the work of storytellers rather than the art of novelists... reflected... By keeping everyone small in focus, Coppola shows the various lives of young lawyers, where every client is needed and most of them need more than a lawyer. "James Berardinelli also gave a three-star movie of four, saying that" the intelligence and subtlety of The Rainmaker surprise me "and that the movie" stands on every other Grisham movie adaptation ".
