History

Russell McVeagh was founded as a one-man practice by John Benjamin Russell (1834-1894) in 1863. He joined various partners until he succeeded in the company by his son Edward Robert Nolan Russell (1869-1939) in 1893.

In 1904, Robert McVeagh joined the partnership and remained involved in the company until his death in 1944. In 1969 the company merged with McKenzie & Bartleet becomes Russell McVeagh McKenzie Bartleet & amp; Co., the name he held until 2000, when it was known only as Russell McVeagh.

In 1988, the company set up its office in Wellington with four founding partners.

The first work of politician Winston Peters after graduating in 1974 was with Russell McVeagh; he lived for about three years, but became involved in politics.

In 2018, the company was criticized for handling allegations that law students have been sexually assaulted by two of his lawyers in the summer of 2015/16.

Controversy

Russell McVeagh faces charges that senior male attorneys are involved in non-consensual and consensual sexual acts with female apprentices. This allegation has resulted in six law schools in New Zealand to sever ties with Russell McVeagh, including the University of Otago and the University of Auckland.

The Company has ordered an external investigation into allegations of sexual violence and harassment.
