Life and career
The son of a neurosurgeon, the late Dr. Joseph Siris and the late Muriel Siris, Siris was educated at North Neck College (1963), Yale College (B.A. 1967) and New York University Law School (J.D. 1970).
After the main victory, Siris was a Democratic nominee in 1992 for New York State Senate District (7) in Nassau County, later represented by Michael J. Tully, Jr. During the campaign, a campaign worker named Weston, under New York's Freedom Information Act (FOIL), requested information on the cost of subsidized subsidies by Tully taxpayer, whom, according to Siris, was a vaguely camouflaged promotion from the old officials though organized as education. Siris argues that such a letter gives Tully (and other office holders) an unfair advantage over challengers who are almost never successful statistically.
When the State Senate rejected FOIL's request and claimed immunity from disclosure, the campaign workers demanded the Senate during the campaign and Siris acted as his advisor. Entitled "Weston v. Sloan" ("Sloan" after serving as Secretary of the Senate), the lawsuit worked to the highest court of New York, Court of Appeal, where the Court, after Siris lost the election to Tully. , directing the Senate to comply with FOIL. During the trial, the Senate was criticized for withholding the requested information.
After the Court of Appeal, then-Governor Mario Cuomo appoints Siris to fill a temporary vacancy in the Supreme Court of New York. Cuomo claims that he was nominated for Siris unaware of the suit and that he has no intention of embarrassing Tully. In any case, the nominees died on the committee.
For his efforts, in 1995 Siris received the annual Root-Stimson award from the New York State Bar Association for public service.
Author of two other articles of law review and writing, Siris began his career representing Conrail and other railroads. Siris is now an advisor to Garden City, New York law firm, Solomon and Siris and has been recognized by the New York Law Journal as one of the foremost lawyers on Long Island. He specializes in real estate law and litigation. Among other real estate-related matters, he has dealt with adverse possession, real property returns, and forgery cases. He also represents JP Morgan Chase in a mortgage priority dispute with high-profile lawyer Dominic Barbara. He is moderator of the Listserv of the real estate section of New York County Lawyers and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation.
Siris lives in Roslyn, NY with his wife, Dr. Karen Siris, an elementary school principal, author, and bully prevention expert. Her daughter, Liz Winchester, is a children's author. His son, John, is a controversial member of the controversial, unbeatable, unbound, and uninvited Bucknell University lacrosse team (to the NCAA Division I playoffs).
