Histori

The city is named after Commodore Thomas Macdonough naval officer and was founded in 1823 around the design of the town's traditional square. The buildings surrounding the square are intact, although there are few vacancies. The state courthouse and the historic jail buildings are on the north side near the Welcome Center at the historically maintained Standard Oil service station, built in 1920. The station is also home to the Main Street and Hospitality Program Offices and the Tourism Office. In the center of the square is a monument to the Henry County Confederation dead.

One block east of the square, the city's original cotton warehouse has been replaced by the Henry County Judicial Center. In the same area, Henry County Courthouse Annex has original oil on Canvas "Cotton Gin" (4 ½ x 11 feet) by artist Jean Charlot. He painted this oil in 1942 for the post office. His works can be found all over the world in everything from children's books to great mural.

The city is a relay station on the New York railway line to New Orleans and is linked by another stage line with Fayetteville and Decatur, and with Macon via Jackson.

On June 24, 1900, a washing during a lightning storm caused a train accident about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of the city. The runoff damaged about 100 feet (30 m) from the Georgia Southern Railroad (Macon division) before the accident, and the passenger train later burned, killing 39.

Several individual buildings and two historic districts of the city are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the historic district of McDonough in the city center.
