Arthur Jerome Eddy (5 November 1859 in Flint, Michigan - July 21, 1920 in New York City, New York) is an American art lawyer, author, collector and art critic.

Arthur Jerome Eddy (also referred to as Arthur J. Eddy) is a prominent member of the first generation of Modern American art collectors. His book Cubism and Post-Impressionism is the first American book to promote this new art movement and the work of Wassily Kandinsky. Contrary to other early American collectors of modernist work, attracted to French modernism almost exclusively, Eddy also collected works by German expressionists and Wassily Kandinsky. He is also known for his support of the Arms Show, purchasing works from shows in New York and Chicago and giving lectures on art during the Chicago show. In 1931, a portion of Eddy's collection was donated by his widow and son to the Art Institute of Chicago as "Arthur Jerome Eddy's Monument Collection" which is an essential core of the Museum's collection of Modern art.

Art and Protector Collectors

His interest in art did not wake up until he saw the Colombian World Exposition in Chicago, where he was most often taken with the work of James McNeill Whistler and Auguste Rodin. Eddy, who traveled to Paris in the mid-1890s, was described by Whistler in the painting. Setting in Color Meat and Chocolate: Portrait of Arthur Jerome Eddy . Around the same time, Rodin also carves Eddy portrait statues, bronze casts located in MusÃÆ' Â © e Rodin in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Albuquerque Museum of Art and History. In 1902 his first book on art, entitled Delight, Soul of Art , was published. The following year he published James A. McNeill Whistler's Records and impressions. Thus through 1912 he focused on late nineteenth-century art.

For Eddy, for many Americans, the 1913 Arms Show proves a revelation of Modern art. Fascinated by the efforts of these artists, he immediately embarked on an Avant-garde art collection with the purchase of a BrÃÆ'nà ¢ ncu statue? I and 25 paintings. "In New York, Eddy bought the 15 most radical works on display, including Marcel Duchamp Portrait of Chess Player (1911) and King and Queen Surrounded by Swift Nudes (1912), Albert Gleizes's Man on a Balcony (1912), and Francis Picabia's Dances at the Spring. [19] In Chicago, he bought three additional paintings by Portuguese artist Amadeo de Souza Cardoso, as well as three lithographs by Maurice Denis and four by ÃÆ' â € ° Douard Vuillard. "On two occasions during the show, Mr. Eddy lectured on" Cubism "at the Art Institute of Chicago.

On his way to London and Germany, he learned of Wassily Kandinsky and in 1920 had bought four of his paintings. Kandinsky introduced Eddy to another artist to work in Munich at the time, Albert Bloch. Eddy will be the most important collector of Bloch, having more than forty paintings and paintings. Eddy's collection in modern art will evolve into more than 100 works of art.

1914 saw the publication as probably his most important writings, Cubism and Post-Impressionism, largely based on information acquired by Eddy from the artists themselves. It is considered the first work published in the United States where Modern Art is presented and described sympathetically. In addition, it was Kandinsky's first sufficient report in America; the artist was represented by only one painting at the Armory Show the previous year.

In the final years of his life, Eddy shifted his focus to American modernization, including several paintings by artists such as Arthur Dove.
