Volcano (formerly Soldier's Gulch and The Volcano ) is the census-designated spot in Amador County, California. It lies at an altitude of 2070 feet (631 m). The population is 115 at the 2010 census. The city is named for its arrangement in a bowl-shaped basin which, according to the early miners, was caused by a volcano. The morning mist rising from the bottom of the valley only strengthens that belief. This area was first known by the people of Colonel Stevenson, who mine Warrior Gulch in 1849. In 1851 the post office was established and in April 1852 there were 300 homes. In 1853, flats and rolls were packed with people, and there were 11 stores, six hotels, three bakeries, and three salons. The hydraulic mining operation, beginning in 1855, brought thousands of wealth seekers to form a city of 17 hotels, a library, a theater, and a fast court of justice.
During the Civil War, Gold Volcano served Union. The Volcano Blues smuggle the "Abe Tua" cannon into the city in a hearse, to intimidate rebel sympathizers. The cannon was cast by Cyrus Alger & amp; Co. in Boston in 1837 and was the first of two 6-pounders made on the same day to be branded with the serial number 4. This 800 Â £ 800 cannon held by the Volcano Blues was only fired once during the Civil War. The Confederate Faction known as Knights of the Golden Circle has many businesses on Main Street. "Old Abe" was fired Main Street causing windows to break out in all stores not yet warned - sympathetic to the South. The other cannons still survive in Shiloh Battlefield and are called "Shiloh Sam". Abe is the only one of those cannons in the US who still use nineteenth century wooden trains, and has an interesting history in itself.
The famous St George Hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Volcanoes almost became the center of government in 1854 and again in 1857, but the newspaper closed in 1857 and after that, the city began to decline.

Places of interest
The volcano has a number of Gold Rush era buildings with signs indicating their historic significance. A post office opened in Volcano in 1851. Volcano offers one of the oldest public stores in California, which has been used continuously since 1852. Union Billiard Saloon and Boarding House opened in 1880 and is also the site of the Court of Volcano State. , led by Judge Peter Jonas. In 1862, BF George built the St. George on the previous trail of the Eureka Hotel, which was burned in 1853, and the Empire Hotel, which was burned in 1859. George Madeira founded the first astronomical observatory in California in 1860 where the 1861 Grand Comet was discovered (in the US). It's listed as the California History Landmark.
The volcano is also home to the Black Chasm Caverns, the National Natural Landmark.
The Volcano Theater Company was founded in 1854. The company does a full season every year, performing at the Cobblestone Theater which has 35 seats and in the larger outdoor Volcano Amphitheater.
Daffodil Hill is a public park that opens every spring to the public without entry fees. Daffodils were first planted in the mid-19th century by landowner Pete Denzer to remind him of the Dutch, his native country. In 1877, Arthur McLaughlin and his wife, "Lizzie" van Vorst-McLaughlin bought the property, which is still owned and managed by their descendants. About 300,000 flowers bloomed during Spring.

Volcano racial makeup is 109 (94.8%) White, 0 (0.0%) African American, 2 (1.7%) Native Americans, 2 (1.7%) Asian, 0 (0.0%) Pacific Islands, 0 (0.0%) of other races, and 2 (1.7%) of two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race is 7 people (6.1%).
The Census reported that 115 people (100% of the population) live in households, 0 (0%) live in unembienced groups, and 0 (0%) are institutionalized.
The population was spread with 20 people (17.4%) under the age of 18, 3 people (2.6%) aged 18 to 24, 11 people (9.6%) aged 25 to 44, 53 people (46.1% aged 45 to 64 years, and 28 people (24.3%) aged 65 years or older. The mean age was 57.1 years. For every 100 women, there are 98.3 males. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there are 93.9 men.
There are 70 housing units with an average density of 46.6 per square mile (18.0/km ²), of which 37 (67.3%) are occupied owners, and 18 (32.7%) are occupied by tenants. Homeowner vacancy rate is 0%; the vacancy rate of rent is 14.3%. 83 people (72.2% of the population) live in housing units occupied by owners and 32 people (27.8%) live in rental housing units.
