The University of California, Hastings College of the Law ( UC Hastings or Hastings ) is a public law school in San Francisco, California, located in the neighborhood Civic Center. It is affiliated with the UC system, although it is not directly regulated by the University of California Bupati. Another UC campus dedicated to educational graduates only, University of California, San Francisco, is also located in San Francisco.
Founded in 1878 by Serranus Clinton Hastings, the first California Chief Judge, it is the first law school of the University of California and is one of the first law schools established in the Western United States. It is also one of the few law schools affiliated with universities in the United States that do not share campuses with students or other graduate programs.

Histori
Hastings has a unique relationship with the University of California. In 1878, when California Superior Court Judge Serranus Clinton Hastings gave $ 100,000 to the University of California to start a law school with his name, he imposed two conditions: the school must remain in San Francisco near the court; and it can not be regulated by the University of California Bupati. Thus the school leader (who holds a double degree from the chancellor and dean) must get funds directly from the Legislature of the State of California, unlike other UC institutions, who receive money from the Bupati. In 1900, it became one of the 27 charter members of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS).
Hastings College of the Law for many years is considered the premier law school of the University of California with the goal of preparing lawyers for law practice in the state, while the Law Department of Jurisprudence at the Berkeley campus, which later became the Boalt Hall School of Law (now Berkeley Law) , intended for legal studies as an academic discipline.
In the 1960s, Hastings started "Club 65", an employee recruitment practice that was forced to retire at the age of 65 from the Ivy League and other institutions. After the passage of age discrimination laws, however, "Club 65" was slowly removed, and Hastings hired the last "65 Club" professor in 1998. In the mid-1950s, Newsweek published a story in where Then dean of Harvard Law School and lawyer Roscoe Pound states, referring to UC Hastings: "Indeed, overall, I tend to think you have the strongest law faculty in the country."

Location
UC Hastings Campus is spread among three main buildings located near the San Francisco Civic Center: 200 McAllister Street has an academic and administrative office, 198 McAllister contains mainly classrooms and faculty offices, and 100 McAllister, known as "The Tower" contains university and student housing offices, as well as Art Deco "Sky Room" on the 24th floor.
The campus is within walking distance of Muni Metro station and the Bay Area Rapid Transit Civic Center/UN Plaza. UC Hastings is usually encountered by students and alumni in the ugliest corner of the world's prettiest city. Indeed, the school has been touted as "UC Tenderloin."
Located within a two-block campus radius are the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, US District Court for the Northern District of California, California Supreme Court, California District Court for the First District, San Francisco Superior Court, San Francisco City Hall, United Nations Plaza (and Annex Federal Building), San Francisco Asian Art Museum, and San Francisco Public Library System Main Library. The heavy concentration of public buildings within the Civic Center, as well as high crime rates, resulted in heavy police presence, and high security, around UC Hastings.
Organization and structure
UC Hastings is managed by nine members of the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors of UC Hastings exists independently of, and is not controlled by, the University of California Bupati. Under California law, eight directors are appointed by the Governor of California. Based on Constitutive UC Hastings's document, the ninth director should be a straight line descendant of UCL Hastings founder, Clinton Serranus Hastings. Members of the Hastings family now serving on the board are Claes H. Lewenhaupt.
UC Regents' UC Hastings removal gave him widespread freedom in shaping educational and fiscal policies; However, as California's education budget shrinks, Hastings must also compete for limited educational funding against fellow UC campuses. Academics
Hastings offers a three-year Juris Doctor program with concentrated studies available in seven areas: civil litigation, criminal law, international law, public interest law, taxation, family law, and more recently, new concentrations in intellectual property law. Most JD students follow a traditional three-year plan. During the first year, students take required courses as well as elective courses. In the second and third years, students can take courses or replace or complement their courses with judicial extravitation or internships, judicial clinics, or study abroad. The college also offers LL.M. one year. degree in US law studies for students holding a law degree from a foreign legal program. This is a law school approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) since 1939.
Hastings participates in the Joint Degree Program with U.C. Berkeley's Haas Graduate School of Business. After completing the four-year program, students earn the M. M. Berkeley and JD degrees from UC Hastings College of the Law.
UC Hastings College of the Law and UCSF School of Medicine from the University of California, San Francisco have started joint degree programs, and in 2011 began enrolling their first class graduate students in Master of Studies in Law (MSL) and LL. in Law, Science and Health Policy programs. Students have courses available at each institution for degree fulfillment. This program is a component of the UCSF/UC Hastings Consortium on Law, Science and Health Policy.
The joint program, the first of its kind in the University of California system, allows UC Santa Cruz students to earn a bachelor's and law degree in six years instead of seven years. The "3 3 BA/JD" program between UC Santa Cruz and UC Hastings recognizes its first applicants in Autumn 2014.
UCSC students who declare their intentions in their first year or early second year will complete three years at UCSC and then move on to UC Hastings to start a three-year legal curriculum. Credits from the first year of law school will be taken into account for a bachelor's degree. Students who successfully complete the first year law coursework work will receive their undergraduate degree, graduate with their UCSC classes, then continue at UC Hastings for the last two years of legal studies.
UC Hastings has a chapter from the Order of the Coif, a national school legal education institute established for the purpose of encouraging legal scholarships and advancing ethical standards of the legal profession. It joined the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) as a charter member in 1900; it renewed its membership in 1949.

Total attendance fees (indicating tuition fees, fees, and living expenses) at UC Hastings for the academic year 2014-2015 are $ 71,247 for California residents and $ 77,247 for non-residents. Transparency School Law estimates the cost of a state-funded attendance for three years is $ 296,028.

The oldest legal journals at UC Hastings are the Hastings Law Journal, founded in 1949. The second oldest journal is the Hastings Constitutional Law Quarterly, established in 1973. It was inaugurated in 1997 to overseeing the growing number of publications at UC Hastings, O'Brien Center for Scholarly Publications now manages the publication of nine UC Hastings journals.
