Berry said he was "absolutely disdained to follow in the footsteps of Stephen F. Austin, Texas's first state secretary.Like him, I came to Texas looking for a better life and unlimited opportunities that can be found throughout our vast state. Every day, I see the pioneering spirit of Austin living in Texas, and this great honor proves once again that Texas is a land of opportunity, both in the private sector and in public service. "
Berry is the eighth and last person who holds a ministerial position in Perry's government. Governor Greg Abbott announced on November 11, 2014, that he replaced Berry with Carlos Cascos, a county judge of Cameron County Republic in Brownsville in southeastern Texas.
