History

The school was founded as a Beverly College of Law in 1966, and was originally located in the Hancock Park area of Westside Los Angeles. It is a private, non-profit educational institution intended to meet the needs of law schools in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.

In 1974, the Whittier College Board of Trustees decided to incorporate Beverly College of Law into Whittier College. In 1975, the Law School was known as Whittier College Law School and later as Whittier Law School. In response to a significant prize for the Law School, the Hancock Park building is dedicated as Ross McCollum's Law Center during a ceremony in which Supreme Court Justice Byron R. White presented the main address.

During the 1990s, the Law School, along with leaders at Whittier College, decided to relocate the campus to Orange County to meet space needs and in response to a request by the community for the ABA law school in Orange County. In 1996, the campus acquired 14-acre campus in Costa Mesa, renovated buildings on site to accommodate the needs of the Law School, and moved faculty and students over a three-year period. In 1997, the move was completed and Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy gave a keynote speech at the opening ceremony.

In 2013, California District Court Chief of Cantil-Sakauye Farmers spoke at the opening of a 4,400 square-foot schoolroom (410 m min supersion 2 ). A large amount of funding to build a $ 2 million new facility was donated by Paul Kiesel, a Whittier alumni and partner at Kiesel Law, LLP. Over 150 contributors, including alumni, lecturers, judges, law firms, members of the Orange County community, and the Whittier School of Law students group, are responsible for the rest.

In April 2017, the school announced that they would not receive first year students and would work with 400 current students to complete their degree. No exact closing date has been announced. It became the first fully accredited legal school in the country to announce the closure at a time of challenge for legal education institutions.
