History

Western State College of Law was founded in 1966 in Orange County, California. This is the oldest law school in the area. In 1987, the school filed an accreditation with the American Bar Association (ABA). Although the school was unsuccessful in this endeavor, it was then accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and by the Barbeque Tester Committee (CBE) of the State of California. Accreditation by CBE makes graduates eligible to take the California Bar exam.

In 1990, the Western State has evolved into three campuses in California including locations in Fullerton, Irvine and San Diego. At the time, the school was the largest law school in California. In 1995, the Western States once again began pursuing accreditation with ABA for its three campuses. In the second half of the 1990s, schools experienced some changes as part of the accreditation process. In 1995, the San Diego school campus became the independently owned Thomas Jefferson School of Law and the following year, the school closed the Irvine site and the students consolidated to the Fullerton campus. In 1998, the school received temporary accreditation from ABA and opened a new law library.

In 2000, the college owner sold Western State to the Argosy Education Group, which had the school for a year before it was purchased by Education Management Corporation. The West Country was granted full accreditation with ABA in 2005, and became the third nonprofit law school to receive ABA approval.

In April 2012, the school was founded as one of the colleges of Argosy University and was officially renamed Western State College of Law at Argosy University. That same year, the school sold its property to California State University, Fullerton for about $ 18 million.

In January 2016, the campus moved to Irvine, California.

In October 2017, it was announced that the law college was sold, along with the rest of Argosy University, to the Dream Center Foundation, a subsidiary of the Megach Dream Center. The transaction was funded in part by Najafi Companies, a private equity firm. Critics claim that sales and switching to nonprofit status are designed to avoid consumer protection rules that focus on nonprofits.
