History
Established as a Toro Motor Company in 1914 to build a tractor engine for The Bull Tractor Company, Toro manufactures and sells lawn and landscaping equipment and precision irrigation systems for use by landscape contractors, golf course supervisors, sports fields and basic managers, as well as individual consumers.
In 1986, Toro acquired Horse Products Division of American Motors (AMC). Wheel Horse manufactures a wide range of lawn and lawn tractors, as well as riding lawn mowers. The division was separated from the AMC so that automakers can maintain focus on the vehicle.
The lawn and garden tractors are then marketed under Toro, Wheel Horse, as well as Toro Wheel Horse names. The acquisition continued with the purchase of Lawn-Boy in 1989, James Hardie Irrigation in 1996, Exmark Manufacturing in 1997, Hayter in 2005, Rain Master Irrigation System, and Turf Guard Wireless Surveillance Technology in 2007, TIPEF industry turf equipment product line in 2009, and USPraxis in 2010.
In the 1990s, then CEO Kendrick Melrose changed the company's strategy, shifting its focus to "professional maintenance markets" (such as golf courses, sports fields, city parks, and commercial properties). This strategy generates higher margins and offers more protection from weather and economic uncertainties than the highly competitive housing market segment. In 2007, nearly 70 percent of the company's sales came from the professional market, versus one-third in 1990.
On December 5, 2001, Toro adopted a new accounting rule, Task Force Emerging Issues had issued and restated the previous period. The application of these rules has no effect on operating profit or net income.
In 2007, the manufacturing of low-end tractor and lawn products was outsourced to MTD Products, for sale at Home Depot stores.
In 2014, snowplow equipment company and Boss Products snow removal equipment was purchased by Toro.
