2016 presidential campaign

On January 28, 2016, Farrell filed for the United States President for the Democratic Party in West Virginia. He cited West Virginia's disappointment with a national candidate as his motivation to run for office, noting the poor performance of US President Barack Obama at Primary Democratic 2012 in West Virginia. Farrell does not plan to run in any additional state, but he says he wants to bring national attention to the 'divisive economic region' caused by the War on coal. Farrell was third in primary West Virginia, receiving just under 9 percent of the vote. In her best performance, Farrell was second in Mingo County, beating Hillary Clinton with 113 votes. He lost to Bernie Sanders who won every county in the state.

Opioid Epidemic

The state of Farrell in West Virginia has become the epicenter of the Opioid Epidemic. Between 2007 and 2012, the drug distribution company sent 780 million doses of opioids to West Virginia, and 1,728 death overdoses occurred. In 2017, Farrell filed a series of lawsuits against drugmakers distributors under state public disturbance laws. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of the various districts, seeks to hold the drug distribution company responsible for the costs incurred to combat the epidemic. In Cabell County alone, 40 million tablets are distributed over a five year period, more than 400 for each of the 96,000 people living there.
