Uninsured and uninsured motorist assurance in Pennsylvania is the optional coverage available for all licensed drivers. Although state legislation requires all licensed drivers to carry liability insurance to drive cars legally, the reality is that many drivers do not comply with this law. A large number, almost 15%, drivers on the road have no liability insurance. For obvious reasons, this driver is known as an uninsured driver (UM). Other drivers comply with the law, but will only bear the minimum liability obligations required by the state. This minimum coverage is often insufficient to cover medical bills or property damage costs incurred in an accident. The insurance company refers to this driver as an underinsured driver (UIM).

To protect their clients in case of accidents, insurance companies offer uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. This insurance will cover the costs incurred by the victims, when the wrong driver has no insurance or does not have sufficient liability insurance to cover the costs involved. It will also cover the medical expenses of hit-and-run accidents.

For example, if the victim's medical costs were $ 25,000 and the driver's liability was faulted only up to $ 15,000, the victim's UM/UIM coverage would pay the remaining $ 10,000 in medical bills. Most insurance companies offer separate policies for UM/UIM body injury and property damage insurance.

Under Pennsylvania State law, property costs resulting from a hit-and-run accident fall under a collision or comprehensive coverage. This type of coverage requires the insured to pay a deduction.

Who and what is covered by UM/UIM liability coverage:

Uninsured insurance/underinsured coverage of body injuries including policyholders, other drivers covered by the policy, and any passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Like insurance coverage, coverage of UM/UIM body injury is purchased with limit. If the driver is faulted is an uninsured driver, then the victim's insurance policy will pay up to per person/per accident limit purchased by the victim. If the troubled driver is a motorist with no insurance, the insured policy will pay up to the limit, and the victim policy will then pay the balance, up to the limit of the purchase. As well as liability coverage, UM/UIM body injury insurance covers body injury, loss of wages, pain, and suffering.
