Legal & amp; Order: Special Victim Unit (often abbreviated as Legal & Order: SVU or just SVU ) is a procedural, legal, criminal American drama television series held in New York City, where it is also primarily produced. In original style Legal & amp; Messages , episodes are often "torn from headlines" or loosely based on real crime that has received media attention. Created by Dick Wolf, the series premiered on NBC on September 20, 1999, as the second series in Wolf's success Law & amp; Message franchise. Legal & amp; Order: Special Victims Unit has been nominated and won many awards, including Emmy 2006 for the premier Achievement Main Actress in Drama Series for Mariska Hargitay, the first, and to date only, an Emmy that will be received on a regular basis whatever Legal & amp; Message series. This is a non-animated US primetime TV series that's been playing at the most since this time since the original cancellation Law & amp; Message on May 24, 2010 and is the longest 4th longest US primetime TV series on major broadcast networks.

Legal & amp; Order: Special Victims Unit initially centered almost exclusively on the Special Victim Unit detective in the fictional version of the 16th Precinct of the New York City Police Department. As this series continues, additional supporting characters are added as detective allies at the Manhattan District Prosecutor's office (known as an adviser from the Sexual Crimes Bureau) and the office of the Medical Examiner. Certain episodes will detail the detective's private life and how they may or may not be involved in the crimes handled during the show. Typical episodes follow detectives and their colleagues as they investigate and prosecute sexual-based offenses, child abuse, and crimes against parents. The show stars Christopher Meloni as Detective Elliot Stabler and Mariska Hargitay as Detective Olivia Benson for his first twelve seasons until the first leaves the players, unable to reach agreement on his contract. Starting May 23, 2018, Legal & amp; Order: Special Victims Unit has aired 434 original episodes.

On May 9, 2018, NBC updated the series for the twentieth season, which will allow it to tie the award-winning Legal & amp; Messages and Gunsmoke for the longest scripted drama in US television history.

Production

History and development

Ideas for Legal & amp; Order: Special. The Unit Victims originated with the 1986 "preppie murder" case of Robert Chambers, who choked Jennifer Levin, a woman she dated whom she later killed during what she claimed was consensual "consensual sex" in Manhattan Central Park. The crime inspired Dick Wolf to write a story for episode one season Law & amp; A message entitled "Kiss the Girls and Make Them Die". Even after writing the episode, however, the case continues to haunt Wolf, who wants to go deeper into crime psychology to examine the role of human sexuality.

The original title of the show is Sexual Crime , reflecting the sexual nature of the crime depicted on the show. Initially there was a concern among producers that, should Sex Crime fail, identifying a new event with Legal & amp; Order franchises can hurt the original show. In addition, Ted Kotcheff wants to create a new series that is not dependent on the original series for success. Wolf felt, however, that it was important and commercially desirable to have "Law & Order" in the title, and he originally proposed the title of the show to be Law & amp; Sequence: Sexual Crime . Barry Diller, then head of USA Studios, was concerned about the title, and it was changed to Law & amp; Order: Special Victim Unit to reflect the actual unit of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) that handles sex offenses that are very heinous. The first episode, "Payback", aired on NBC on September 20, 1999.

Executive producer

Executive producer Neal Baer left Law & amp; Order: SVU as showrunner at the end of season twelve, after eleven years (season 2-12) on the show, to sign a three-year contract with CBS Studios. Baer was replaced by former Law & amp; Order: Criminal Intent golfer Warren Leight. In March 2015, it was announced that Warren Leight signed a three-year contract with Sony Pictures Television, which would allow him to work on another seventeen seasons. Leight joins the show in thirteen seasons. This was announced on March 10, 2016, the original Law & amp; Order veteran producer Rick Eid will take Leight's place as a showrunner starting in season 18. Creator Dick Wolf commented to The Hollywood Reporter , "I am so glad Rick has decided to rejoin the family and hope that he will be here for years to come. "During post-production season 18, after the announcement that SVU was updated for the nineteenth season, it was revealed that Rick Eid left the series. He will take over the other Dick Serigala/NBC series. Chicago P.D.

It was announced on May 25, 2017 that the original Law & amp; Messages and Legal & amp; Order: Criminal Intent showrunner Michael S. Chernuchin will repeat his role starting from the nineteen seasons. Chernuchin is also co-creator and executive who produced the Chicago Justice showrunner, another Wolf-related show canceled by NBC at the end of the 2016-17 TV season.

Filming

Many exterior scenes Legal & amp; Order: Special Victims Unit was filmed on location in New York City, Wolf's hometown, in all five areas of New York City. Because the NYPD faces a variety of law enforcement challenges on a daily basis, this background provides the authors of ideal location supplies to choose from. Fort Lee, New Jersey served as the shooting location for Detective Elliot Stabler's residence in Queens, New York.

While looking for a place to film the show's interiors, the producers found that no suitable studio space was available in New York City. As a result, a space was chosen at the NBC Archive Center building near North Bergen, New Jersey, which has been vacant for some time, and equipped with air conditioning, adequate parking, and 53,000 square feet (4,900 m 2 ) from the stage area. The Archive Building is used for police and court scene scenes, with various other locations in Hudson County used for other scenes, such as scene scenes on Meadowlands Parkway at Secaucus in 2010. Production left New Jersey for New York in 2010, however, when New Governor Jersey Chris Christie suspended the tax credit for film and television production for Fiscal Year 2011 to close the budget gap. The event moved into a studio room at Chelsea Piers which has been occupied by the original Law & amp; Message series until its cancellation in May 2010.

Casting

Casting for main characters Legal & amp; Order: Special Victims Unit occurred in the spring of 1999. Dick Wolf, along with officials from NBC and Studios USA were in the final auditions for two leads at Rockefeller Center. The final round has been narrowed down to seven finalists. For the female lead, Detective Olivia Benson, actress Samantha Mathis, Reiko Aylesworth, and Mariska Hargitay are being considered. For the male role, Detective Elliot Stabler, the finalists are Tim Matheson, John Slattery, Nick Chinlund, and Christopher Meloni. Hargitay and Meloni had auditioned in the final round together and, after the actors left, there was a moment of dead silence, after which Wolf exclaimed, "Oh well, no doubt whom we should choose - Hargitay and Meloni." Wolf believes that this duo have the perfect chemistry together since the first time he sees them together, and they end up being his first choice. Garth Ancier, who later became head of NBC Entertainment, agreed, and the rest of the other panels began to voice their approval.

The first actor to be cast for the show was Dann Florek. Florek originated Captain Don Cragen's character in 1988 pilot for Law & amp; Messages and play characters for the first three seasons of the show until he gets fired on the orders of the network executive, who wants to add a female character to a male main player. She maintains friendly relations with Wolf, however, and goes on to direct three episodes of the original series as well as guest stars sometimes on the show. Shortly after Florek replicated his role to Exiled: A Law & amp; Movie Order , she received a call to be in Sexual Crime . Initially reluctant, he eventually agreed to star in the show as Cragen on assurances that he would not be asked to audition for the role.

Shortly after the cancellation of "Murder: Life on the Road", Richard Belzer heard that Benjamin Bratt had left Law & amp; Messages . Belzer asks his manager to summon Wolf and throw an idea for Belzer's character from Assassination, Detective John Munch, to become a new partner of Jerry Orbach's character, Detective Lennie Briscoe, since they had previously worked together on three crossover. Wolf really liked the idea, but had thrown Jesse L. Martin as Briscoe's new partner, Detective Ed Green. The idea was reset, however, to have a Munch on Law & amp; Order: Special Victims Unit instead. Since the Munch character is inspired by David Simon's portrayal of Detective Sergeant Jay Landsman and developed for the Murder by Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson, the addition of Munch to the players requires the approval of all three. The right deal has been reached and, while Fontana and Levinson agree to release their royalty rights, a contract with Simon requires him to pay royalties for each new event in which Munch is the main character; as a result, Simon receives a royalty every time Munch appears in the episode of the show.

Dean Winters plays the role of Munch partner, Brian Cassidy, at Belzer's insistence. Belzer looked at Winters as a kind of little sister, and told Wolf, "Well, I'm going to do this new show, SVU , only if you make Dean Winters my partner." Wolf was a partner of Winters Belzer, but he was contractually required for another show at the time, the drama HBO Oz . Since the role in Law & amp; Order: Special Victims Unit was originally intended to be just a few episodes, Winters was forced to leave when it was time to film Oz again. Winters returns for the final of Season 13, "Rhodium Nights," repeating his role as Cassidy. He also appeared (as Cassidy) at the Season 14 second season premiere of "Lost Reputation"/"Above Suspicion". He then becomes a recurring character to the 15th season. The vacancy left by Winters' departure filled for the remainder of the season by Michelle Hurd as Detective Monique Jeffries, a character that Wolf promised that, despite starting out as a minor character with a single scene on the pilot, will eventually flourish. Hurd left the show early in season two to join Leap Years players. Munch's permanent partner comes in the form of an actor who transforms into an actor, Ice-T, who previously worked with Wolf in New York Undercover and Exiled . Ice-T originally agreed to do only four episodes of Law & amp; Order: Special Victims Unit , but he quickly gained affection for the ensemble nature of the players. He moved to New York City before his four-episode contract ended and remained with the show as Munch's permanent partner, Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola.

Initially, the event focused exclusively on detective police in the Special Victims Unit from the 16th district, with members of the District Attorney's office sometimes appearing as guest roles crossing over the original Law & amp; Messages . From the second season onwards, the format is changed to be more faithful to the original Law & amp; Message concept by entering a court case. Stephanie March has little experience on television before being casted Law & amp; Order: Special Victims Unit , he also does not watch much TV. Nevertheless, March was cast as Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot at the start of the second season but still believes that, due to the dismal nature of the series, it will be short-lived. He stays with the series for three seasons, however, and leaves when he believes he has reached a natural conclusion of character development. He will then showcase the character as a guest appearance on season six and as a regular character on the short-lived Wolf series, Conviction , where he promised more to do. Diane Neal was a guest star on Law & amp; Order: Special Victims Unit in season three before being casted as a replacement for Cabot, Casey Novak, in season five. Neal remained with the show until the end of season nine, after which he was replaced by Michaela McManus. March returns to the show in the tenth season (after McManus's departure from the players) when Neal Baer proposes Cabot to receive a character bow to revitalize the second part of the season, which will continue until the eleventh season.

Tamara Tunie was selected as Melinda Warner's medical examiner in season two after working with Wolf earlier at New York Undercover , Feds , and Law & amp; Messages . Warner was originally a recurring character but became a regular character in season seven, and Tunie added to the opening credits at the time. When initially acting as Warner, Tunie appeared as Jessica Griffin's lawyer on CBS soap opera during the day When The World Turns . From 2000 to 2007 (and once again briefly in 2009), he appeared in both series simultaneously. In 2002, he also appeared in the Fox-espionage themed drama series 24 , in the repeated role of CTU Acting Director Alberta Green. B. D. Wong was asked to film four episodes as Dr. George Huang, a Federal forensic and Federal forensic psychiatrist (FBI) and criminal profiler loaned to the Special Victim Unit. After four episodes, she was asked to keep watching the show.

After he starred in Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee and guest starred as Detective Chester Lake in the eighth season, Wolf felt that Adam Beach would be a great addition to the players and asked him to become a permanent member starting with the ninth season. Although Beach feels its role is a "dream role", the character proved unpopular among fans who feel that it was designed to gradually write Richard Belzer or Ice-T. Feeling there were too many police characters on the show, Beach left the show just after one season. Michaela McManus initially felt too young to serve as Assistant District Attorney (ADA) before being elected as ADA Kim Greylek in the tenth season. McManus, the moon is removed from a recurring role on One Tree Hill , stays with the series only half a season, however, before leaving for unspecified reasons.

Paula Patton joins the cast as ADA Mikka Von. He replaces Stephanie March. However, Patton broke up after an episode to film Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, and was replaced by Melissa Sagemiller in the recurring role of ADA Gillian Hardwicke.

Before the end of the twelve season, Mariska Hargitay asked for a lighter workload. As a way to write him out of certain episodes, a plan for his character is promoted to a supervisory role discussed. At the end of the twelve season, Christopher Meloni left the players, unable to reach an agreement with his contract. Warren Leight became a new player the same year and signed a contract before he knew that Meloni would leave the players. The second major departure to be announced in 2011 is from B. D. Wong. On July 17th, Wong announced on Twitter that, "I actually did not return for season 13, I jumped into Sad ! Amazing!" Wong added, "I do not know if or when I'll be back at SVU ! It's great to have a cool job for 11 years and be a real NY actor." Wong took on his role as Dr. Huang in the episode of season 13 "Dearest Father". In response to this departure, two new main actors were hired, and some changes were made to recurring players.

In June 2011, it was announced that Kelli Giddish and Danny Pino will join the players as regular players of the new series. A few weeks later, it was announced that Stephanie March and Diane Neal would repeat their role as ADA Alexandra Cabot and ADA Casey Novak, respectively. The launch of season 13 is marked by a retooling event called Warren Leight as "SVU 2.0". These accompanying changes include Tamara Tunie being knocked out of the starring role acting guest star and repeated actor Joel de la Fuente not appearing for the first time since 2002. From the latest changes, Warren Leight said, "those scenes [featuring Fuente.] Can become dry "and hire Gilbert Gottfried as a more comedic replacement. In addition to these changes, Linus Roache becomes a cast member repeatedly in his role Michael Cutter, whom he plays in Law & amp; Order ; on the former SVU ADA Executive Cutter serves as the Bureau Chief for ADAs attached to the Special Victim Unit.

In season 14, RaÃÆ'ºl Esparza joins players in recurring capacity as ADA Rafael Barba and before the premier 15 season, Esparza is promoted to the regular series. Also in season 15, Belzer left the cast in the fifth episode, "Wonderland Story", where Sgt. Munch retired from the NYPD and took a job at DA office as an investigator. Later in the season, Captain Cragen announced his departure from the NYPD, which made Sgt newly promoted. Benson is the commander of the temporary squad. In leaving the player, Florek ended up running 400 episodes as Captain Cragen. In season 16, Peter Scanavino joins the series, first in a recurring role for episode 1-3 and later promoted to the lead character in episode 5, with Kelli Giddish, Danny Pino, Ice-T and RaÃÆ'ºl Esparza no longer appearing in every episode. On May 20, 2015, it was revealed that Danny Pino will leave the players after the 16th season finals "Surrender Noah".

In August 2017, it was announced that Philip Winchester would reappear in season 19 as ADA Peter Stone, his character from Chicago and Chicago Justice, who was the son of Benjamin Stone, ADA on original Legal & amp; The message appears. He later also announced that Brooke Shields was listed to take on a major recurring role that began in Season 19 of the long-running dramatic series. On February 7, 2018, RaÃÆ'ºl Esparza left the series after six seasons.

Salary

In the 12th season, both Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni have become one of the top actors at the highest cost in a drama, with each earning almost $ 400,000 per episode, whose salary TV Guides says just exceeded by Hugh Laurie's home. During the sixteenth season, Hargitay reportedly earned $ 450,000 per episode, or $ 10,350,000 per season, In the seventeenth season, his salary increased to $ 500,000 per episode.

Series overview

Based on the 16 New York City Police Department of Manhattan, Law & amp; Order: Special Victims Unit delves into the dark side of the New York Underworld as a new elite squad detective, Special Victims Unit (SVU for short), investigates and prosecutes sexually oriented crimes including rape, pedophilia and domestic violence. They also investigate the abuse of children, the disabled and parents of victims of non-sexual crimes that require special treatment. All while trying to balance the effects of the inquiry on their own lives. Her stories also touch on political and social issues related to gender identity, sexual preferences, and equality rights. While victims are often killed, this is not always the case, and victims often play an important role in the episode. The unit also works with the Manhattan District Prosecutor's Office as they adjudicate cases and seek justice for victims of the SVU and victims with the precision and passion to win and bring closure to an intensive investigation. The series often uses stories that are "torn from headlines" or based on real crime. Such episodes take on real crime and interpret it by changing some details.

Initially the show focused around the couple detective Elliot Stabler & amp; Olivia Benson and John Munch & amp; Brian Cassidy. Stabler is an experienced veteran of the unit who has seen it all and is trying his best to protect his family from the horrors he sees every day. Benson's difficult past as a child of a rape victim was the reason he joined the unit. Their back ups are John Munch, and his first partner Brian Cassidy. Munch is a transfer from the Baltimore homicide unit, which brings with its sparkling intelligence, conspiracy theories, and investigative skills geared up on the streets. While Cassidy was young and wanted to learn from his detective colleagues. Both detectives received support from Detectives Monique Jeffries and Ken Briscoe. When Cassidy was transferred to Narcotics after thirteen episodes, Jeffries partnered with Munch for the rest of Season One and Briscoe was phased out. At the start of the second season, Munch then permanently partnered with Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola, who has a unique yet sometimes vulgar sense of humor and an investigative experience making him a formidable partner for Munch. The detective is overseen by veteran Captain Donald Cragen who oversees the team from 1-15 seasons. Cragen's robust yet supportive approach to complex team cases guides the squad through the challenges they face every day. Also on the team's payroll is FBI Special Agent Dr. George Huang and Medical Examiner Melinda Warner. As resident psychiatrist for the Special Victim Unit, Huang helps keep the officers in their right mind in a field that can make ordinary people go crazy. He also serves as a criminal profiler of the population, and his insight into criminal minds has often helped the officers to break the heaviest robberies, while Warner has become an integral part of Manhattan's Special Victim Unit, and his personal skills have contributed to a high unit success rate in case of closure.

The unit did not receive a full-time assistant district attorney until the second season, when Alexandra Cabot was assigned to work with detectives. After Cabot's departure in season five, he was replaced by Casey Novak, who remained as ADA until the end of season nine. Kim Greylek became a permanent ADA in the premier ten season, until Cabot returned in mid-season when Greylek left. Cabot remained ADA through the second half of the season eleven. After Cabot's departure, the ADA vacancy was filled by Sonya Paxton (Christine Lahti) and Jo Marlowe (Sharon Stone) until the end of eleven seasons. Gillian Hardwicke served as SVU ADA during the twelve season. By the thirteen seasons, Cabot and Novak returned as an ADA. From the start of the fourteenth season, ADA Rafael Barba has been a SVU prosecutor, leaving the mid-season nineteen. Peter Stone in Chicago Justice became SVU's ADA after Chicago Justice was canceled after just one season.

In season 13, another major change occurred when Stabler left the twelfth season of the final. Detectives Nick Amaro and Amanda Rollins joined the team that filled the void left by Stabler. Amaro brings empathy to his cases in the face of a stressful home life, while his violent instincts and instincts help him to seal the cases, but his secrets can thwart his career. In the current season, SVU Manhattan is now run by Lieutenant Olivia Benson.
