History
Houston ISD, the Houston Police Department, and the Mayor's Office worked together to form law enforcement programs on three separate campuses. In 1980 the district decided to consolidate the program into one campus. HSLECJ opened on Monday, January 19, 1981 at the former George Washington School building. It became the first specialized school of law enforcement curriculum in the United States.
In 2012 an item to rename the school "High School of Law and Justice" has been removed from the HISD board's agenda. In the Northern Hemisphere in 2012 the HSLECJ campus has an estimated value of $ 26 million.
In July 2013 St Thomas High School and AV investment group Dickson Street were involved in a dispute over HSLECJ property acquisition. On Thursday 18 July 2013 the HISD board rejected both requests. David Thompson, the HISD board's lawyer, stated that the two bidders violated the district's tacit policy policy.
On October 15, 2013, Elk Mountain Ltd. make a cash offer of $ 47,927,114, while St. Thomas has made an offer of $ 45 million. In November 2013, St. Thomas offers $ 60 million for campus. The final deadline for bidding is November 1, 2013. Gary Hansel, HISD's real estate manager, stated that he does not know whether Elk Mountain and AV Dickson Street are the same group, but they share brokers.
A new HSLECJ is being built to replace the current campus. It will be built near the intersection of Coyle and Scott. It is scheduled to open in 2016, when a name change will take effect.
