The Center for Constitutional Rights has coordinated the efforts of American lawyers to deal with habeas corpus, and other legal appeals, against several hundred Guantanamo detainees.
Only American lawyers are allowed to visit detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, in Cuba. They must go through a security check first. And they must agree that they can not speak from the notes they took during their meeting with their clients until they have been released for release.

Complaints from the attorney attorney
- Many lawyers repeat the claim that their clients have been harassed, and receive inhuman treatment.
- Lawyers have reported that it's hard to build trust with their clients, because:
- Guantanamo Guards have warned them that lawyers are Jewish or homosexual.
- Guantanamo interrogators had previously used the "false flag" interrogation technique, and represented themselves as their lawyers, in an attempt to get prisoners to divulge information they had kept during their interrogation.
- Lawyers report that the Department of Defense has interfered with their ability to meet with their clients, telling them that they did not spell their names correctly.
- Lawyers report that the Defense Department interferes with their ability to meet with their clients by refusing to provide government translators, and raising national security concerns about the translators they propose.
- The body reviewing their notes, before they can consult with them, arbitrarily classifies their notes, so they can not consult them. Omar Khadr's lawyer, Muneer Ahmad, found, on his first visit to the safe center that was the only place where lawyers could review their records, that nearly all of the twenty pages of notes he took when he first met Khadr were classified above the level security clearance.
However, an Army investigation found this allegation unfounded. A spokesman for the US Department of Defense stated "It is our policy not to interfere with legal counsel."
The Defense Department stated that "they see evidence of a misinformation campaign directed against al-Qaeda in charges of torture and mismanagement of the Koran at Guantanamo Bay."
