Blake, Cassels & amp; Graydon LLP ( Blakes ) is an international corporate law firm based in Canada. This is one of the "Seven Sisters" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Founded in 1856 by Dominick Edward Blake, Blakes has offices in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, New York City, London, Bahrain, Beijing and related offices in Al-Khobar and Shanghai. It is a charter member at Lex Mundi, an independent law firm referral network. Blakes is an advisory member of TechLaw Group, Inc. Since 2009, Blakes Chairman is Brock Gibson, and since 2002 Robert Granatstein has become a Managing Partner Company.

Blakes was launched in 1856 after Dominick Edward Blake was summoned to the bar and established a partnership with Stephen M. Jarvis in Toronto. Soon it Blake & amp; Blake when brother Samuel Hume Blake joined.

In 1867 Blakes combined what would become the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. Bank remains one of the company's oldest clients. In 1878 Blakes was the first business in Canada to install a telephone system that provides direct connections to the Ontario High Court and Supreme Court of Canada offices at Osgoode Hall.

In 1882 Zebulon Aiton Lash joined Blakes and began to establish corporate legal practice. In 1885, with 15 lawyers, Blakes was one of the largest corporate law firms in the young Canadian Confederation.

In 1894, Clara Brett Martin articulated Blake. He was summoned to the bar in 1897, becoming the first female attorney in Ontario and the United Kingdom.

In 1930 Blakes moved to Toronto's King Street West 25, a 34-storey, 145-meter structure that is the tallest building in the British Commonwealth for over 30 years. In 1953, the company's name was changed to Blake, Cassels & amp; Graydon.T.D. Regehr, "Relationship, Arrangement of Partnership, and Nepotism at Blakes, a Toronto Law Firm, 1858-1942," in an Essay in the Legal History of Canada, ed. Carol Wilton (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1996), 207-247.

In 1959, Blakes was an advisor to the petitioner in the case of Frankel Corp. Ltd. v. Minister of National Income , S.C.R. 713. The outcome of this case is determined when a taxpayer has a separate business.

In 1968 Blakes represented the defendant in the case of Composer, Author and Publisher of Assoc. Canada Limited v. CTV Television Network Limited et al. , S.C.R. 676--. The plaintiff's claim that the defendants violated article 3 (1) (f) of the Copyright Act by communicating a musical work named with radio communication can not be supported on the literal meaning of the law - invite because, in the view of the definition of legislation, communicated not "works" but "work performance". In 1970, Blakes grew to 66 lawyers.

In 1979 Blakes represented the defendant at R. v. Chapin , 2 S.C.R. 121. After two trials and two appeals, it was stipulated that the Migratory Migration Convention Law is a statute of rules applicable to the general welfare of Canadian society and its wildlife. Section 14 (1) creates a "breach of public welfare" and is not subject to full assumptions of mens rea . The following year Blakes is part of Labatt Breweries of Canada Ltd. v. Canadian Attorney General 1 S.C.R. 914. Blakes wins the case for the applicant because it is determined that parts B.02.130 to B.02.135 of the Food and Drug Regulations are invalid and Sections 6 and 25 (1) (c) of the Food and Drug Act Act is ultra vires Parliament as far as they associate with malt liquor.

In 1985 Blakes opened an office in Calgary, where the company became an energy sector adviser. In 1986 Blakes was one of the first Canadian law firms to expand internationally with offices in London, England. The company continued to expand, opening an office in Vancouver in 1989 that focused on natural resource companies, financial institutions, technology businesses and governments. His office in Ottawa, opened in 1990, serves clients who interact with lawmakers, federal agents, and technology companies.

In 1994, Blakes represented respondents at Schmidt v. Air Products Canada Ltd. , 2 SCR 611, the decision of the first Supreme Court of Canada concerning the surplus of pensions and holiday contributions.

In 1998 the company opened and headquartered in Beijing to serve clients engaged in East-West commercial trade. Blakes' Montrà ©  al office was launched in 2001, focusing on banking, financial services, securities, mergers and acquisitions, energy and information technology businesses.

In 2003, Blakes created the Toronto Daily Bread Toronto Legal Challenge, which involved a number of Toronto law firms to raise money for Daily Bread Food Bank. That year the challenge increased to C $ 60,000.

In 2004 Blakes opened an office in the United States to serve cross-border clients. In 2009 the company opened an office in Manama, Bahrain, forming an association with Saud Al-Ammari's company in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. That year Blakes served as the council for respondents in the case of Grant v. Torstar Corp. SCC 61, [2009] 3 SCR 640--, in which the Supreme Court recognizes the defense of journalism responsible for defamation claims.

In 2011 Blakes was recognized as "one of Canada's Best Diversity Entrepreneurs" for the fourth consecutive time by Mediacorp Canada Inc. In 2012 Blakes donated C $ 383,000 to the Fondation du Center hospitalier de l'Università © de Montrà © al (CHUM) and a joint campaign of the McGill University Health Center Foundation (MUHC) to raise funds for the university hospital.

In 2012 Blakes is an advisor to the defendant at Andersen v. St. Jude Medical, Inc. , 2012 ONSC 3660. The court's termination of the plaintiff's action marks the end of the first class/general liability product action the trial issue will be completed in Ontario.
